Carpenter ants

Carpenter ant

Identification:

Carpenter ants (Camponotus spp.) are large ants known for their robust size, typically ranging from 6 to 12 millimetres in length. They vary in colour from red to black, with some species exhibiting a combination of these hues. Carpenter ants have a distinctive heart-shaped head and a narrow, pinched waist, which distinguishes them from termites.

Habitat and Behavior:

Carpenter ants are primarily found in forests, woodlands, and sometimes urban areas where they nest in damp or decaying wood. Unlike termites, they do not consume wood for nutrition but excavate galleries and tunnels to build their nests. These nests can cause significant structural damage over time, especially when located in wooden structures or buildings.

Diet: Although carpenter ants do not eat wood as termites do, they are omnivorous scavengers. They primarily feed on insects, honeydew from aphids, and a variety of foods found in human habitats, such as sweets, meats, and fats.

Lifecycle: Carpenter ants undergo complete metamorphosis, progressing through egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The reproductive cycle involves the production of winged swarmers (reproductive ants) that emerge from mature colonies to establish new nests during favourable conditions, typically in spring or early summer.

Signs of Infestation:

  1. Sightings: Visible ants, especially large worker ants, indoors or around wooden structures.
  2. Frass: Piles of sawdust-like material (called frass) near nest openings.
  3. Wood Damage: Presence of smooth, clean tunnels and galleries excavated in wood.
  4. Rustling Sounds: Faint rustling noises within walls or wooden structures where nests are located.

Control and Prevention:

  1. Eliminate Moisture: Repair leaks and reduce humidity to discourage nesting.
  2. Seal Entry Points: Seal cracks and gaps around doors, windows, and utility entry points.
  3. Trim Vegetation: Maintain vegetation away from the structure to prevent ant access.
  4. Professional Treatment: Consult with pest control experts for effective eradication and prevention strategies, especially for persistent infestations.
