The Rats
Appearance: Rats typically measure between 30 to 45 cm in length and weigh between 200 to 480 grams. They display a variety of colours, with the most common being brownish-grey, complemented by a greyish-white belly.
Physical Features: Rats are distinguishable by their blunt snouts, thick and short nearly hairless ears, and distinctive foot structure—four toes on the front and five on the rear. Their teeth can grow an average of 12.5 cm each year. Despite these features, rats have very poor eyesight and are colour-blind.
Rats: Pests Inflicting Havoc
Rats pose a significant threat when found indoors due to their destructive nature and ability to transmit dangerous diseases to humans. Their association with various parasites like fleas, known carriers of plague, further exacerbates health risks for humans.
Identifying Rat Species
The Norway rat, also known as the brown rat or house rat, is the predominant species found across the United States. Its presence spans every state, making it a ubiquitous concern for homeowners.
Damage Caused by Rats
Rats are notorious for their economic impact and role in human suffering. They contribute significantly to food destruction and contamination, with approximately twenty per cent of food supplies affected by their activities. Beyond food, rats are known to gnaw on electrical wires, posing fire hazards and increasing repair costs.
Detecting Rat Infestations
Early detection of rat infestations is crucial to mitigating their destructive potential. Signs include sightings of rats, audible noises from attic spaces, and the presence of droppings throughout the home. Distinguishing between mouse and rat infestations can often be determined by the size variance in their droppings.
Health Risks Associated with Rats
Rats are vectors for numerous diseases, capable of transmitting pathogens directly through food contamination or indirectly via parasites like fleas. Diseases such as rat bite fever and leptospirosis underscore the health risks posed by their presence.
